Being Two Dimensional

Have you ever wished you were a cartoon? I have… This is my surreal journey into being a two-dimensional star made of pixels and light.

It all begins in three-dimensions – my physical body in time and space. Through cameras I am flattened into two dimensions, on your computer monitor, bedroom television, and soon printed on glossy video boxes mass produced worldwide. In 2d, I am able to share myself with more people than I ever can in 3d. There’s also an issue of control. My dreams don’t always come true in 3d, but I’m the goddess of my two-dimensional world. Sometimes I think I’m more comfortable here.

Kurt Vonnegut called mirrors “leaks” into another world. My image pulls my attention, takes me far into myself, into the infinite world of ideas. Cameras are mirrors, preserving moments into products that live if not forever, at least with a relatively longer shelf life than my physical body. The camera is a necromancer, the agent through which the dead comes back to life.

Below you’ll find a photograph taken of my ancestors, the pre-colonial malaya (free) people who, centuries later, have found their way to live in my consciousness and now in yours. I welcome you to my two-dimensional world. I hope you enjoy entering it as much as I enjoyed creating it.
