It never ceases to annoy me when mainstream gets away with atrocious things that porn gets scapegoated for. Let me explain. I just got this link to a news article about how Christina Aguilera’s latest music video was banned by the Thais because of the words “Thailand’s sex tourism” and “young underage girls” appearing in the Thai language on the background while she dances.
First of all, this is absolutely on purpose, corporate board meeting stuff. Christina Aguilera, like the Britney Spears clones, relies on the whole lolita thing to be a pop star.
Secondly, who would have cared about the Thais, and what they thought? Those who can read their written language are a tiny percentage of the world population. Who cares if the bimbo’s music video is banned in Thailand when the publicity is making the rest of the world check the video out?
Which brings me to my point. All this crap about George W putting in more effort into cracking down on child porn, the stigma on legally-aged women playing the lolita game… all of it becomes bogus when on mainstream media, there are movies, news, music etc. pushing the concept into the G-rated public consciousness.
At least porn does society the favor of posting disclaimers, options to exit, etc. Mainstream just barrels on with no warnings. The TV news broadcasting a little girl’s abduction may be just as evil as the abductors themselves, because they are capitalizing on this evil incident to their advantage and bringing awareness to this heinous deed to people who may otherwise not even conceive of the idea.
It just pops my little girl bubble. Once again, I am left feeling that the world is a horrible place, where nothing is as it seems, where honest people can be condemned and rich crooks walk away scot-free. Ah, the pains of growing up!
In a couple more weeks I will be visiting Bangkok through my web design client Adult Bangkok Travel. I’ve only heard wonderful things about the place. I plan to see the ancient temples at Ayutthaya, then sample the nightlife. I’m really curious about the lady-boys, apparently the Thai lady-boys are the most beautiful in the world. May – I love what you have written here, and you are so right. You can’t let it get you down though. I think we all need to remember that most people in the act like sheep; who want to be lead – who want to be told what to think, and what is ok to do. Right now it seems like they want a clown like GWB to tell them what the limits are. The bottom line doesn’t change though; its all about the money. You hit it right on the head as far as the exploitation of abdution (or any similar situation) – The child is exploited twice. All these people, living in the nice “safe” pasture created for them by modern society seem to like nothing more than to gaze long and hard at the very things they find abhorent. I guess we just can’t expect consistancy from the world.
If you stop expecting it, you may be happier – but I guess that has its own set of coscquences.
