HR Giger

HR Giger is one of J’s favorite artists. We have a book of his art in our library, HR Giger ARh+ published by Taschen. I am fascinated with Giger’s cyborgs and creatures: graceful, ancient, decay reinforced with machine-like parts. I wouldn’t say my knee-jerk reaction to Giger’s art is one of lust. In fact, I am frightened by his vision at the same time that I am drawn to it.

Alien is one of my favorite films, it was originally titled “Space Beast” before Walter Hill rewrote it extensively. Ridley Scott did an amazing job. Same goes for Bladerunner – a true sci-fi classic. There’s a scene in The Island that is a blatant ripoff from Bladerunner, where Scarlett Johanson’s charcater talks about her memories, blah, blah, blah…. it’s totally swiped from a scene in Bladerunner where Rachel tells Deckard about her memories, and he tells her they’re implants, from Tyrell’s niece.

Sorry, I’m using your blog for my own personal militant agenda against Michael Bay films. I apologize.

I am a sci-fi nut! Alien and Bladerunner are on my list of favorite films too. Giger’s creatures are very graceful and frightening. Bladerunner, I love! Rutger Hauer is sooo sexy!!! I haven’t seen The Island, but sometimes I don’t mind when other filmmakers do some kind of tip of the hat to films that have inspired them. It’s all in the execution, of course.

Two of or favorites, too. Lemme ask, though: why’d you post the alien? Is there a sensuality about it to you.. or something? :D

What really sets Alien and Bladerunner apart was a vision of the future as a dirty decaying trash heap. All the movies prior showed the future as shiny sanitized and minimalist – like Star Trek. Now most sci-fi movies have adopted the Bladerunner vision.

I posted this ad for HR Giger’s show, Gigerotique, at the Art @ Large gallery in NYC because I wanted to bookmark it. The gallery website will be posting images from this show within the next few days.

It’s true, though, that I have an alien fantasy. Not necessarily Giger’s Alien, but the Biomechanoid painting I posted above is pretty close. I fantasize about a slippery many-tentacled creature probing into my pleasure holes. Blindfolded and bound like the female in that painting, I would relinquish all control over my body, just be overwhelmedly one with this creature… *sigh* In my wildest dreams, Giger and Ridley Scott would team up again and make alien porn. I’d audition for the lead! ;D

Giger should create an exhibit like a haunted mansion where the exhibit is the work, instead of the traditional art exhibit with sculptures and paintings on the wall. The print medium isn’t really that effective for his work since what he’s really doing is creating another world.

Yeah! An installation type of exhibit would be cool. Have you seen his chairs? I’d love to see a chair that’s also a sex toy, you know… tentacles poking out…

Unfortunately Art @ Large is a small space, so more than likely he’ll have mostly two-dimensional works, although the ad says he’ll have sculpture and jewelry. Maybe just really small pieces on display on the wall.
