Party

I’ve been so busy since Halloween. I sewed my baby’s costume – Max from Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are. My grandmother taught me how to sew on one of those old Singer treadle machines. She was a passionate seamstress. She used to take one look at what Imelda Marcos wore on TV, sew all night and have the dress fitted to her size by morning.

I threw my baby a birthday party this past weekend. Wonderful time. My two-year-old loves attention, and demanded the guests sing the “Happy Birthday!” song over and over. It was a small party, just close friends and family. Jenny came with her baby and her husband, the elusive Shane. Jenny is the catalyst to my becoming a mother. Without her, I would still be living with my head in cyberspace, no complications, no responsibilities, but no spontaneous bursts of delight either.

Our babies have known each other since before birth. They play so well together. They can occupy themselves for hours. At some point during the party, Jenny showed me what she and Shane were doing – playing hangman on our Magna-Doodle, guessing words like orgasm and sixtynine. They are so cute! I’d love to get them in bed with me and Jay… I know Jenny would like that, but only if Shane says yes. Shane might be reticent. It would take some very delicate negotiating.
