Fairs are to the country as subway trains are to the city. They are great places to observe a whole lot of human beings.

Leitmotif at the country fair: fat mamas and skinny daddies. Being a mama myself I can recognize what happens after a man and a woman turn into parents.

Mama, while pregnant, feeds the baby by feeding herself. After birth, she is still consuming as much as she used to while pregnant. She has nested, too, and so much sitting to hold the baby is making it almost impossible for her to lose the belly fat.

Daddy feels the pressure of having to provide more for the wee one. He is working more hours, and here in the country, work is usually manual labor, moving his body, getting more exercise, not sitting at a desk typing into a computer. He cannot bring enough food to satisfy mama and baby, so often he takes the food right out of his own plate to feed his family. A Bangkok taxi driver told me this was his life as well, so this scenario seems universal.

I also noticed that men still flirt with me as much as they used to before I became a mom. Only now, they flirt through the wee one. The few times I walked around while Jay was off doing something else, carnies buddied up with my kid, offering free ball throws, balloons and toys. They got me all smiling and amused at my kid’s antics before engaging me in conversation.

Early morning dream: I am at an ATM machine frustrated that the numbers on the touch screen move around. I can’t type my PIN fast enough before the machine times out on me.
