Here’s a photo of my menstrual body painting inspired by ancient blood paintings on the walls of Sego Canyon.

This is the first body painting I made that is inspired by a two-dimensional design meant for a wall.

Jay painted it on me from my drawing. First time I shared this experience with him. Although I appreciate him volunteering to paint me, I really didn’t enjoy the experience. I’ve always done this solo before. It’s meditative for me. Having him around complaining about the smell and making comments about how I could accomplish the same result from using paint out of a tube harshed my mellow and forced me to have to explain this ritual that means so much to me.

I’ve always accepted opposition, and have gotten used to being misunderstood or judged harshly for the On My Period project. I am wholly aware of this being strange. I don’t even mind the opposition. It’s part of the whole experience. Opposition clarifies my motives and reasons behind what I do.

I think Jay didn’t know how strong the smell was going to be when he first offered to paint me. We both know better now.
