I found this gem from when I first started having my period again after becoming a mom. I didn’t get my period for 7 months after I gave birth. I still remember how I felt when I got my period after its long absence.

It made me feel complete. No bullshit. The whole time I didn’t have it, I worried about whether I was okay, whether it was normal for me not to be bleeding, and is my body still capable of bearing children? Hell, am I pregnant again??? Finally getting my period after 8 months was a big relief.

I was already feeling good about my periods prior to having a baby. Becoming a mom was amazing! I felt like superwoman: giving birth, breastfeeding, raising my child. It’s rewarding, but exhausting. My periods made it necessary for me to rest, reflect and renew myself before going back into high energy superwoman mode.

I found this video Jay and I made when I was 7 months pregnant: big enough to make an impression, but not so big that I shake the ground whenever I move.

The first scene presents a problem: How do I trim overgrown pubic hair, when I can’t see past my bulging belly? I just had to LOL at my predicament. Mothers (and pot-bellied men) know what I’m talking about. As soon as my thighs were out of sight, I was like, “Pubes? What pubes?”

A couple nights ago, the night of the big storm here in California, we sat right up by the picture window in our living room looking out at the ocean. The sound of wind and rain excites me. We got up to over 12000 feet in elevation. The Eisenhower tunnel was an awesome drive. After we got out of White Water Mountains it was a boring drive. The Pixies cranked up loud helped me stay awake through Kansas.

The most interesting part of the drive were the billboards. There were ads for “The Largest Prairie Dog” and a “Two Headed Chicken.” And the Jesus billboards, who pays for these? Closer to Missouri there was a billboard for an adult superstore, and beside it was a billboard against pornography paid for by the same group who pays for Jesus. Nonstop entertainment, folks!

In Missouri it was one after another adult billboards, XXX megaplexes as big as America likes everything to be.

In Indianapolis we visited Jay’s brother. He suggested we drive north to Ohio and take the ferry to Canada.

The past week I have been taking the car back and forth to the shop to prepare for our road trip from California to Maine. I told the mechanic to check everything and make sure our car is in top shape for our cross country trip. It was several trips to the car shop because parts and tires were late coming in, but I still had to do errands so I would walk to the shop to pick up my car, do errands, then drop the car off and walk home.

Maybe I got dust in my eye and now it’s fucking infected. Damnit!!! I look like a freaking freak!!!

I was so close to putting this trip off one more day. Maybe if I slept more my eye would magically de-puff. Alas, we’re all packed and I’ve got a 4 year old jumping all over the place saying, “Are we going yet?” nonstop. So on we went out of the foggy San Francisco Bay Area, eastward bound.

First stop, my parents’ home. Dropped off a few perishables I didn’t want rotting at home, a house plant that needs tending while we’re away, and of course, to give them big hugs and kisses before we went on our way.

After dinner, Jay and I took a deep breath and said goodbye. This was it!!! We were leaving our comfort zone. We headed toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. Husband, child, dog and me.

Just before 10 pm we arrived at Truckee, California. We saw Truckee while we were on the Amtrak train from Sacramento to Reno, and fell in love with this charming little Wild West town. It’s so festive here tonight. We passed beautiful Victorian buildings all lit up for the 4th of July holiday. I hear there is a parade going through town tomorrow. I better go to bed and get some shut eye. Ugh! My eye!!!

Back then I had an irregular cycle. It was common for me to have cycles as long as 60 days, and since I was not yet sexually active, it wasn’t a big deal if my period ran late.

Another part of this exercise was recording how our vaginas felt. We marked the calendar Fertile if we were wet, Infertile if we had a tacky discharge, and Dry if we were, well, dry.

This exercise may very well be the beginning of my sexual exploration, though at that time I remember thinking of it as tedious and never took it seriously enough to document everyday. In fact, I remember making it all up on the day we turned those monthly calendar sheets in.

As soon as I started being sexually active, I got on the pill, and didn’t have to think much of counting the days in my cycles. Almost immediately after quitting the pill, I got pregnant, became a mom and didn’t have my period for eight months after birth.

Since I got my period again, it is like clockwork. I have not gone back to taking birth control pills. I have begun counting out my monthly cycles to determine when I’m fertile, when I’m expecting my period, and when I have sex.

The nuns actually taught me something about sex!

There is an iPhone app that Fertility Friend released to help make this easier. I use it faithfully. It’s called the Menstrual Calendar. You first set it up with your cycle length and the first day of your most recent period. The app marks each calendar day and predicts fertile days and when the next period begins. Make sure you set Auto Stats to OFF so you can make adjustments if you are early or late a day or so.

The app also lets me enter information about my period – None, Spotting, Light, Normal or Heavy; and about whether or not I had intercourse – Protected or Unprotected.

The only function missing is a text field to enter who the sex was with, for women who have multiple partners, in case knock-on-wood she gets pregnant and is wondering who the father may be. This makes keeping a diary of all the dirty details indispensable.

Playing sport games on Wii is awesome. Wii tries to get gamers off the couch and get their bodies moving. Other games don’t translate well, though, and got us hooking our old Game Cube controllers back up.
